Wearable Arts Competition WOWS festival goers

Last year’s visitors to the annual Ocean and Orchard Festival were well and truly ‘WOWED’ by the talent and creativity that presented itself at the Wearable Arts Competition.  With a prize pool that couldn’t help but entice some of the best talent this region has to offer, the crowds were amazed by the spectacle on display.

2014 WINNERS, from left to right: Sophie Littin (24), modelling her TINY MIGHTY POWER Supreme Award Winning entry “Aztec Water Goddess”, Jack Kinghan (8), modelling his HEIKE BY DESIGN Junior Innovation Award Winning entry “Lion Fish”, Zara Parmenter’s (22) entry “Davy Jones’s Mistress” modelled by Lucy, winner of the KERIKERI RESENE COLOURSHOP Open Innovation Award, and by a great show of noise from the eager crowds, the KERIKERI CARPET COURT People’s Choice Award winner, Melanie Kinghan wearing her “Sea Foam” creation.

The innovative use of materials such as builder’s foam, bean-bag beads, chicken-wire, cor-flute, wire, tea-dyeing, and all manner of reclaimed materials amazed and impressed the judges.

The Wearable Arts competition is now well-established in the Bay of Islands, and the organisers wish to give this year’s entrants notice of the theme for Saturday 28th of February 2015:

I dreamt I saw a …….

This theme is to be completely open to individual interpretation, however the outfit must have a 10% component of Ocean or Orchard, be it either in theme or in materials used.

Register online here, by Friday 20th February 2015.  All entries must be original and worn by self or model on the festival day. Prize categories will be announced by 1st February.
